Blaydon is well known in the north east as the “Geordie Anthem” is a song called “The Blaydon Races” which is about people coming from the centre of Newcastle, “alang the Scotswood Road” to see the horse racing at Blaydon.
Although there are no longer horse races, there is an annual Blaydon road race that follows the route. On site there is a mural, painted by a local artist depicting scenes from the song.
As part of the redevelopment, new seating was installed, and these have lines from the song engraved in to the backs of the seats. There is also a blue plaque on the west entrance to the site,
